So I'm blog hopping it today (yes that is to a thing!) and I figured I'd stop by the Booking Through Thursday hop. The question this week is:
Do you read books “meant” for other age groups? Adult books when you were a child; Young-Adult books now that you’re grown; Picture books just for kicks … You know … books not “meant” for you. Or do you pretty much stick to what’s written for people your age?
Well...I think, for the most part, I read books within my age group. I mean, I’m a classics-lover and I’m in my late (oh the misery!) twenties now so I’d say that’s the right age group for that stuff right? I mean, when I was supposed to be reading most of this stuff in high school I would argue that I was too young to really appreciate and understand a lot of it (hence why I DIDN'T actually read the books assigned in class). But now, reading the books on my own, I love them!
I mean, I do occasionally delve into a YA if I get a really good recommendation from a friend. And I must say that then I am very rarely disappointed. Like recently I read the YA novel Unwind by Neal Shusterman. It’s a dystopian novel (which, as most of you know, I thoroughly enjoy) and I think it was very well done. My review on that should be coming soon.
Also, being a lover of classic novels, I do also pick up the occasional children’s classic. I mean, how can one go wrong with those? You can’t!

I'm the same, read a lot of classics in high school and liked them well enough but didn't really understand them. Now I find I'm enjoying them a lot more. I think they should change the curriculum so you read classics later in life, perhaps in college. Now I am branching out into YA which I guess wasn't really around when I was a teenager and I used to think it was all rubbish but I'm learning to appreciate it!
I'm with you on the topic! I tend to stick to adult fiction unless I get a glowing recommendation from a good friend for a YA book. Or if I don't realize I'm reading YA.
I pretty much stick to my age group now. I know so many adults who only read YA and I don't get it. I've read some that are good, but most just aren't for me. I started reading "adult" books around 12 (middle school favs were Gone With the Wind and anything by Stephen King). I'm just not interested in the lives of teens now.
Now that I'm reading your post and the comments here, I realize that there was much to address in this question that I simply overlooked. And I agree that reading classics while young can sometimes cause us to detest books we might come to appreciate later in life. On the flip side, I sometimes wonder if being forced to read - for instance - As I Lay Dying in high school set some sort of subliminal & complex linguistic foundations for reading much of Faulker as an adult and loving it. Just musing...
Blogger threw away my comment! Grrrrrrr!!!
Reading your BTT made me remember Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. It isn't exactly dystopian, but life has changed after an asteroid moved the moon closer to the earth. I recommend this YA novel. Here's my review:
